Former two-time Pittsburgh Steeler Brad Wing has signed a deal with the San Antonio Brahmas of the newly formed United Football League.
The Brahmas were a part of the XFL last year, and were one of four teams to survive and make it into the UFL, which is comprised of eight total teams, four from the XFL and four from the USFL.
Wing, who got his start in the NFL with the Steelers, came back to the team in 2023 to fill in when starting punter Pressley Harvin was injured. The Australian native averaged 45.0 yards per punt (38.9 net yards) in two games per punt, arguably outperforming Harvin in a brief sample size.
Last season marked his first action in the NFL since 2017. After a rookie season with the Steelers, Wing was traded to the New York Giants, where he remained for the next three years before being released by the Giants ahead of the 2018 season.
His journey back to the NFL was remarkable, including overcoming a substance abuse struggle and coming back to the team where he made his debut.
Though he was released once Harvin came back from injury, the Steelers did re-sign him to their practice squad ahead of their matchup against the Buffalo Bills in Super Wild Card weekend. He traveled with the team to Orchard Park, but Harvin ultimately played in the game.
Now, Wing is going back to his old team, albeit in a new league. Wing was drafted by the Brahmas last year with the 23rd pick in the XFL’s Specialist Phase of their draft.
He became one of the league’s top punters, recording 47.9 yards per punt in the XFL. His performance helped put him back on the map for NFL teams, even if it did not result in a full time NFL gig.
