My friends, we once again have an update on our official Fifth Avenue Sports Emil Bemström Six Goal Watch™.
I started this after the Penguins had sent a sixth round pick and forward Alex Nylander to Columbus to acquire him. That sixth round pick, however, had a strange condition to it: if Bemström scored six or more goals for the Penguins during the rest of the 2023-24 season.
Obviously, it was a little bit of a tricky situation. Bemström scoring that many goals would have been a huge boost to the struggling bottom six, but that also would have meant a massive swing in the draft capital going Columbus’ way.
Heading into tonight, Bemström had 2 goals and 2 assists in 23 games for the Penguins. He’s found himself in and out of the lineup, and his ice time has ranged from 5:00 to 13:01.
Barring Bemström going on an absolute heater during the last *checks notes* two days of the season, the Penguins and Kyle Dubas will not have to worry about a silly condition making a big impact on the team. However, Bemström did add to his total, scoring off a one-timer for the Penguins in their home finale against the Nashville Predators.
As the Penguins themselves noted, a true team effort by the Swedes to push their lead to 4-2. The goal was a massive insurance marker in a chippy game that went back and forth for most of the night.
Despite his overall low scoring prowess in Pittsburgh, Bemström has found a knack for scoring big time goals. He kicked things off when he scored a pivotal goal in a February 25th matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers.
That early goal, coming in his Penguins debut, put the Emil Bemström Six Goal Watch™ on the map, and although it took us a long time to add a second edition, we finally did on April 1st, when he scored on a breakaway beauty that wound up being the game winner for the Penguins.
Now, Bemström has another chapter in the goal watch, once again a big-time goal for the Penguins as they fight to keep their season alive, even if it’s just for one more day.
