It’s becoming a big question as we start to figure out what this Pittsburgh Pirates roster looks like in 2025.

Where is Henry Davis going to play?

Though Davis has been largely awful, especially in the batting department, during his brief stints as a big leaguer, there’s no doubt that the former first overall pick in 2021 will be given every chance to make the major league team out of spring training, just like he did last year.

But in that competition last year, Davis didn’t have a large field of candidates to contend with.

His fellow rookie catcher in Endy Rodriguez had been ruled out for the year after suffering an arm injury in winter ball. Free agent signing Yasmani Grandal had suffered plantar fasciitis and was out for the vast majority of spring training. Joey Bart was still in San Francisco at the time.

It was Davis’ job to lose, with Jason Delay backing him up. Once Grandal could return, the plan was to option Davis back to Triple-A Indianapolis and roll with a Davis/Grandal tandem, with the veteran helping mentor the youngin.

Then, things changed. Delay got injured in his first game, and the organization’s sudden lack of catching depth forced the Pirates to make a trade. General manager Ben Cherington, in one of his few truly good moves, swung a deal to get Joey Bart from the Giants in exchange for a minor league pitcher.

Bart, whose struggles in the Bay were compounded by a harsh adjustment period to major league pitching and being asked to live up to the name of Buster Posey, has since blossomed into a star in Pittsburgh.

Bart has locked down at least one of the two catching jobs for the Pirates in 2025, if he isn’t the clear starter at the position.
