Though I’m sure there can always be some eleventh hour change of heart by the very top of Pirates brass, it sure seems as though both general manager Ben Cherington and manager Derek Shelton are staying. 

At least, that’s the outlook that was given by the Pirates today at Cherington’s end of year press conference. His very being there likely means his job is safe for at least one more year, and his answers on other staff changes didn’t ease the mind of any fan. 

While Cherington intended to paint a rosy picture for the Pirates in 2025 and beyond, his remarks instead were just another sign of just how out of touch the front office – and ownership – is from a fan base that is boiling over with anger. 

Among the various things he voiced yesterday Cherington told the media that he recommended Shelton’s retention in 2025. Based on Cherington’s words, that sentiment was met warmly by Pirates ownership, a surefire sign that Shelton is in the dugout on Opening Day next year.
