The trade deadline has started rather early this season. Last night, hockey fans were treated to a true blockbuster deal, when the Colorado Avalanche sent Mikko Rantanen to the Carolina Hurricanes for a package that included Marty Necas and Jack Drury.
But while the NHL’s trade deadline isn’t until March 8th, this season offers a bit of a twist. With the Four Nations tournament taking place in just a few weeks, we might see two different trade deadlines this year: one before the tournament, and one after.
So, we could see more trades sooner rather than later this year, making for a more entertaining February than usual in the hockey sphere.
I’ve been pondering what the Penguins and general manager Kyle Dubas might do with this team over the next five weeks or so. It’s the first time in forever that the Penguins are going into the deadline truly having the identity of a “seller.” Even though they traded Jake Guentzel away last year, there was still a bit of a shock at what was a very un-Penguins move.
So with all that being said, I figured I’d better get this out sooner rather than later. Here’s what I would do this trade deadline:
