For one of the very few times this winter, the Pittsburgh Pirates have done something that was met with near universal praise.
The Pirates have reportedly claimed right-handed reliever Justin Lawrence off waivers from the Colorado Rockies today, adding him to a crowded field of contenders for their bullpen jobs.
Lawrence is coming off of a rough year, one that saw him go 4-4 with a 6.49 ERA, 1.777 WHIP, and some really bad strikeout and walk rates and ratios.
If you don’t know anything about Lawrence, it’s understandable that you’d question why this is being penned as a pretty good move for the Pirates. So let’s break things down a little more.
