Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas loves his guys.
Just ask Toronto Maple Leafs fans. He loves bringing in guys for a second time around, and he loves acquiring people that he’s familiar with and worked alongside before.
That mantra only continued to grow after his exit from Toronto, when he signed on to take the reigns in Pittsburgh.
When Dubas first arrived in Pittsburgh, he brought over several members of his front office with him, including now assistant general manager Jason Spezza. The following year, he hired Wes Clark to serve as Vice President of Player Personnel.
But that Leaf influence hasn’t stopped with just the suits. On the ice, Dubas has acquired tons of players he knew in Toronto over the last few years Via both trade and free agency, Dubas has brought in former Leafs like Noel Acciari, Radim Zohorna, Michael Bunting, Connor Dewar, and Connor Timmins.
I could go on, but you get the point, right? Yes, Dubas bringing in an ex-Leaf to his new home in Pittsburgh is a pretty old trope, but there’s plenty of reason why it exists.
So naturally, the Penguins are brought up when one of Dubas’ guys is about to become a free agent. Over in Toronto, the Maple Leafs officially placed forward David Kämpf on waivers for the purpose of contract termination.
