Heading into training camp this season, the Penguins had two prospects battling it out in a crowded forward crop.
Sam Poulin, the team’s first round pick from 2019, truly felt like he was in a make-or-break year as a 24-year-old. Valtteri Puustinen, a seventh round-pick who once seemed to have secured a roster spot in the team’s bottom-six, was now fighting to re-claim that spot under a new head coach.
Neither one of them made the team out of camp. Assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the American Hockey League to open the year, they had to wait for an opportunity to try and get back into the lineup in Pittsburgh.
Poulin got that chance, briefly. He figured into two games for the Penguins earlier this season, but if he’s hoping for a chance to get back into the NHL full time, it won’t happen in Pittsburgh. The same can be said for Puustinen.
Less than half a year later, both players were gone. Poulin was traded as part of a deal to Edmonton on December 12th. Puustinen was sent to Colorado about a month later. With his departure, there are no members of the team’s 2019 draft class still with the organization.
So, with all five members of that class now elsewhere, it’s time we take a look back on who those picks were, their time with the Penguins, and where they are now.
But first, we need to address where a few picks went. Below is a summary of the picks that were traded out and acquired by the Penguins ahead of the 2019 draft.
