The Pittsburgh Steelers are in unchartered waters for the first time in nearly two decades.
After 19-year head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down following the team’s disastrous playoff loss to Houston last week, the Steelers have started the process of figuring out who the next person up for the job will be.
A lot of names have been flying around in a year where almost a third of the NFL is looking for new head coaches. For Pittsburgh, that rolodex includes names spanning from former Miami head coach and current Minnesota defensive coordinator (and ex-Steelers employee) Brian Flores, to the next potential offensive mastermind in Nate Scheelhaase.
But a new name has entered the picture, one that isn’t generating a ton of excitement from Steelers fans: Mike McCarthy.
On Wednesday, McCarthy had his interview with the Steelers, making his case for the job, with the team officially announcing it late last evening.
To me, his prospects at landing this job certainly feel inflated by his agent. McCarthy wasn’t seen as an option at all, let alone a “strong contender” until days ago, and as the job market starts to pick up, his agent seems to be doing all he can to try and heighten his client’s value.
What is interesting to me, however, is that McCarthy reportedly took himself out of the running for the Tennessee job, which ultimately went to Robert Saleh. If that is true, it feels like it’s Pittsburgh or bust for the Greenfield kid.
