Spring training action is well underway, but that hasn’t stopped Major League Baseball front offices from working the phones.

Wednesday night, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati conducted a swap, with the Pirates sending right-handed reliever Kyle Nicolas in exchange for infielder/outfielder Tyler Callihan.

For the Reds, they’re hoping to bring in a high-leverage arm who can help solidify their bullpen. For the Pirates, this trade follows the approach general manager Ben Cherington has followed for months, one that trades pitching for batting.

Pittsburgh already flipped Johan Oviedo for Jhostynxon García, Mike Burrows (in a three-way trade) for Brandon Lowe and Jake Mangum, and now has acquired Callihan for Nicolas.
