It was a pretty quiet day on Friday as the NHL trade deadline came and went. Though 34 trades were completed, involving 54 players and 38 draft picks moved, this year’s deadline didn’t have the blockbuster-type deals we saw at this time last year.
In Pittsburgh, the phones were also pretty silent. In fact, general manager Kyle Dubas probably didn’t even need the second one he has. The Penguins made just one trade at the deadline, acquiring forward Elmer Soderblom from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for a 2026 third round pick.
That pick initially belonged to the San Jose Sharks, and was a forgotten part of the three-team, 12-asset Erik Karlsson trade during the summer of 2023. With the Penguins still operating with a surplus of picks, Dubas has felt comfortable offloading some of those assets for more established players.
