It’s official: the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs will feature a renewal of the Battle of Pennsylvania.
In glorifying the history between these two cross-state rivals, many look back to the 2012 first round series between them. The rivalry was a joy for all involved, whether you had a side in the fight or were a neutral observer.
But that series was not the most recent playoff meeting between the Penguins and Flyers.

The Penguins, the first back-to-back Stanley Cup Champions in the salary cap era, were embarking on a three-peat bid in 2018. They set themselves up well with 47-29-6 record, good for an even 100 points and a second place finish in the Metropolitan Division.
Nipping at their heels, however, were the Flyers. Finishing at 42-26-14, Philadelphia finished just two points behind the Penguins, snagging third place in a division that sent five teams to the tournament that year.
With home ice advantage, a 4-0 record over the Flyers in the regular season, and their immense recent postseason success, the Penguins were the heavy favorite heading into this series.
