Jesse Puljujärvi’s career is quite illustrious.
From being a fourth overall pick in a highly energetic Canadian market, to getting banished to the south in Carolina, to a rocky journey in Pittsburgh, the latest step in Puljujärvi’s NHL journey is being placed on waivers by the Penguins.
In 21 games for the Penguins this season, the forward had three goals and five assists.
The Penguins first took on Puljujärvi last season. Puljujärvi had flashes in Edmonton, but he never truly lived up to the billing of his draft class. After six years with the Oilers, where he tallied 112 points in 317 games, the team moved on, trading him to Carolina at the 2022-23 trade deadline.
He put up a measly two points in 17 games for Carolina, who did not re-sign him at season’s end and allowed him to become a free agent.
In the offseason, Puljujärvi underwent double hip resurfacing surgery, which kept him unsigned due to its lengthy recovery time. In December, as Puljujärvi was gearing up to the next phase of his rehab, the Penguins signed him to a very rare in-season professional try out, which allowed him to participate in team practices and other activities, but barred him from playing in any regular season game before signing a standard NHL contract.
