One of the call ups that the Pittsburgh Pirates have made this season was to Matt Gorski, a right-handed hitter who can play all over the outfield and first base in a pinch.
Gorski was promoted to the major leagues on April 24th. For Gorski, the call to a major league team had been a long time coming. A second round pick by the Pirates in 2019, Gorski had spent more than five years of pro ball, working his way through Pittsburgh’s farm system.
The 27-year-old had played five years of pro ball, waiting for his shot. A second round pick by the Pirates back in 2019 out of Indiana, Gorski slowly worked his way up in Pittsburgh’s farm system.
Two years ago, Gorski was primarily playing in Double-A Altoona. He slashed .238/.296/.437 with the Curve. Last year, he he had snagged a full-time job near home at Victory Field with Triple-A Indianapolis. While his batting numbers didn’t light the International League up, he established himself as a bit of a power hitter in Indy.
In 114 games, he slashed .257/.319/.522 with a team-leading 23 home runs and second-place 67 RBI. Gorski’s power, if he could harness it, was his best shot at a major league opportunity.
