The catching job of the Pittsburgh Pirates has been an interesting watch this season. Joey Bart, Henry Davis, and Endy Rodriguez are all capable catchers for the Pirates, and the latter two are trying to establish themselves as a long-term player for the Bucs.

Bart has taken the bulk of the starts at catcher for the Pirates this season. He has played 44 games so far this season, sixth most on the team. By comparison, Davis has played 19, and Rodriguez taking 15 (although most of those came at first base).

Rodriguez has been injured for a little over a month, leaving Davis to serve as the backup catcher to Bart ever since.

The righty Bart is coming off a breakout season with the Pirates last year. After being acquired in April by the club, Bart slashed .265/.337/.462. His .799 OPS led the team last season.

It was an incredible get for the Pirates, who had sent a Low-A pitcher San Francisco’s way in exchange. He was a huge boost to a struggling offense for the Pirates.

This year, however, has been a bit of a different story. Bart is slashing .240/.247/.308 this season with one home run and 11 RBI.

Recently, Bart has been on a frigidly cold streak. Coming into Tuesday night, Bart was 0-for-12 with three strikeouts and was completely ineffective at the plate. It didn’t get much better during the game, which he had to leave early in.

Bart left the game in the fifth inning of Tuesday night’s game in Arizona. It was unclear why he left at the time, but it was speculated that Bart might have suffered some symptoms from getting hit by a backswing back in the fourth inning.
