For the first time in quite a while, the upcoming NHL Draft will actually be of great interest to the Penguins.
Entering his third draft in charge, Kyle Dubas has 11 total picks to work with in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, giving him plenty of flexibility to use as little or as many as he wants.
Pittsburgh’s first pick of the night will come Saturday night, where the team is slated to pick 11th overall. Assuming the Penguins don’t trade down from both first round selections they have (more on that in a moment), it will mark the highest the organization has drafted since 2012. In that draft, hosted in Pittsburgh, general manager Ray Shero took defenseman Derrick Pouliot.
Thirteen years later, the Penguins find themselves with another high pick, hoping for some better draft luck as Dubas tries to fast-track the rebuild/retool this summer.
With the draft coming up this weekend, I figured now was the perfect time to take a look at how the Penguins acquired each pick in this draft, and the ones they gave away.
Pittsburgh has five of their own picks that they managed to keep:
- First round (11th overall)
- Third round (73rd overall)
- Fourth round (105th overall)
- Sixth round (169th overall)
- Seventh round (201st overall)
The two missing picks here are a second rounder and a fifth rounder. That second round pick trails back to the Erik Karlsson trade from 2023. In the three-team deal, that pick (now 41st overall) was sent up north to Montreal, the only asset the Canadiens received from the Penguins that they decided to keep.
The other missing pick now belongs to Toronto. At the most recent deadline, Dubas made a deal with his hold team, bringing in defenseman Conor Timmins and Connor Dewar to help plug some holes in the roster after Pittsburgh’s sell-off.
Now, let’s get into the picks that they acquired. Of course, this exact order of picks the Penguins have will probably change. Dubas loves a good draft trade, and with the salary cap exploding this offseason, it figures to be a busy offseason.
But, as of 2:43am on the east coast (yes, I’m insane), this is the batch of picks they have.
