It’s been a fairly uneventful offseason for the Pittsburgh Penguins so far.

Though the team had an an uncharacteristically large draft class, including three first round picks, the Penguins have operated a lull-you-to-sleep kind of summer.

Anthony Mantha headlined a dull free agency class, and the Penguins have only made three trades since the start of the new league year on July 1st. Many of the top tradable names on Pittsburgh’s roster are still here.

But eventually, this slow and boring offseason will have to pick up. General manager Kyle Dubas will have to open the doors and heat up his summer sales event, because in this upcoming season, if you aren’t trying to be good, you need to be as bad as possible.

Gavin McKenna awaits whoever holds the first overall pick in next year’s NHL Draft, and he is not a prospect that you want to miss out on.

The Canadian prodigy had 41 goals and 88 assists for 129 points in 56 games for the Medicine Hat Tigers. He also had nine goals and 29 assists for 38 points in 16 games.

The previous year, McKenna was also well above a point per game, registering 34 goals and 63 assists for 97 points in 61 games. He added two goals and four assists in five playoff games.

Now at Penn State, it would take a pretty disastrous season there for anyone to even consider someone else for the first overall pick in 2026. This kid is truly special.
