The moment so many of us have been waiting for in Pittsburgh finally happened Friday night, when the top pitching prospect in all of baseball finally made his Major League Baseball debut for the Pirates.
Finally taking to a major league mound, Bubba Chandler tossed four scoreless innings, holding his opponents to only two hits and striking out three. He posted his first two MLB strikeouts during his first inning of work.
Chandler picked up the first on a 100 mile per hour pitch on the outside corner, with Ryan Ritter only able to watch it go by.
Then, two batters later, Chandler struck out Mickey Moniak, getting him to chase upstairs on another triple digit heater.
Since saves became an official stat in 1969, Chandler became the first Pirate to earn a save in his major league debut. He is also one of four MLB pitchers to record a four-inning save in his debut.
Even if pitching in a new environment and in a new role, the moment certainly wasn’t too big for Chandler, who looked every bit as good as fans hoped he would. Sure, it’s just one game, but he’s certainly an easy guy to get hyped up from watching pitch.
