As the Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a season-defining win over the Ravens in Baltimore on Sunday, their offense looked a little different than usual.

For starters, it looked a lot better. Aaron Rodgers and his top receiving weapon, DK Metcalf, both had their best games as Steelers. Rodgers tallied a season-high 284 passing yards while going 23-of-34. Metcalf, meanwhile, racked up a season-high 148 receiving yards on seven catches and 12 targets.

But it also looked different from a personnel standpoint. Inserted into the lineup Sunday were two veterans, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Adam Thielen.

Valdes-Scantling had first signed with Pittsburgh’s practice squad a month ago. A former receiver for Aaron Rodgers when he was in Green Bay, Valdes-Scantling brought some experience and a deep threat to his game.

Thielen, meanwhile, was the slightly more surprising one. The Steelers had claimed him off waivers from Minnesota the Tuesday before the game, with the 35-year-old coming to a mutual decision with the Vikings to be allowed to play somewhere else. Thielen arrived in Pittsburgh the following day, taking part in the few practice opportunities he had to assimilate into Pittsburgh’s offense.

No one was sure whether either option would be active for the team’s pivotal Sunday afternoon matchup in Baltimore vs the Ravens. The Steelers don’t usually have wide receiver additions come in this late in the season.

But, Tomlin wanted both of them in the game, with two new guys in, someone had to be the odd-man out. On Sunday, that was Roman Wilson.
