Spring training is officially underway, and although we couldn’t watch it on television yesterday, it’s a reminder of just how close the start of the regular season is.
Here in Pittsburgh, one of the more interesting names to keep an eye on this spring is Nick Gonzales. He made his season debut in Grapefruit League play yesterday, going 0-for-2 with two strikeouts and a walk, which he eventually scored on.
But on a team that brought in some actual offensive firepower in the hopes of propelling Paul Skenes into the postseason, Gonzales suddenly has a lot less roster security.
The seventh overall pick by general manager Ben Cherington and the Pirates back in 2020, Gonzales hasn’t quite grown into the solid hitting infielder that the organization hoped he would.
