Yesterday, Penguins fans braced themselves for the news they hoped wouldn’t come, but feared would.

On Wednesday, the Penguins placed sidney Crosby, captain of Team Canada who was injured at the Winter Olympics on a hit by Czech defenseman Radko Gudas, on injured reserve. Per the team, he is expected to miss at least four weeks as he works his way back.

It’s a crushing blow to a Penguins team has surprised the entire NHL this year. Pittsburgh was thought to be one of the league’s worst teams this year, projected to spend most of their season in the basement and contend for a lottery pick in this spring’s draw.

Instead, the Penguins have surged. Rallying behind the same core they’ve deployed for two decades and aided by career years by their free-agent signings, the Penguins propelled themselves to a 29-15-12 record (70 points), good for second in the Metropolitan Division. MoneyPuck currently gives them an 85.9% chance to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
