Major League Baseball doesn’t dominate the sporting world in this country and this region the way it once did. 

Yes, the game is growing internationally in a phenomenal way. This year’s amazing iteration of the World Baseball Classic is the best possible showcase of that. 

Back at home, however, the league can’t quite keep up with some of their sporting opponents. The “American pastime” title now rests in the hands of the National Football League, who dominates pretty much any space they want to. 

And of course, the elephant in the room is the threat of a lockout after this season. The debate over a salary cap could cost MLB a season and hinder their efforts to continue to attract younger fans. 

But when it comes to the preseason, I would argue that no league succeeds like MLB. 

Spring training has a special place in the sporting landscape. No other league in North America has succeeded in captivating fans with exhibition games like MLB has.
