When Paul Skenes takes to the mound this afternoon at Citi Field in New York, his battery mate Henry Davis will catch him behind the plate.
For Skenes, the first overall pick in 2023, the ace will embark on his third season in the major leagues. His illustrious young career includes an NL Rookie of the Year Award in his first season and a Cy Young honor in his second. The holder of a career 1.96 ERA is hoping to lead the charge in bringing October baseball back to the Steel City.
For Davis, the first overall pick in 2021, the catcher will make his second Opening Day appearance in a career that has spanned parts of four major league seasons. Davis, an All-American during his time in Louisville, has not been able to find any consistent hitting success in the major leagues, which was his calling card in college. This season, he’s looking to finally turn that around.
Davis, 26, is entering what truly feels like a “make or break” season. Sure, you could have said that last year, but the stakes are even higher now.
