On May 31st, 2025, the Pittsburgh Pirates secured an upset 5-0 win on the road in San Diego against the Padres. Andrew McCutchen hit a home run, four Pirates had multi-hit games, and a trio of bullpen arms helped keep the slate clean after left-handed starter Bailey Falter went over six strong innings.

It was a pleasant surprise for the Pirates in the midst of a six-game western road trip, but it was a rare win in the month of May. With their final game in the books for that month last year, Pittsburgh went a measly 10-18; those ten wins were tied for the fewest win total in any full-time month last season.

The team was absolutely miserable. The win brought the Pirates little comfort in the standings, lifting them to only 15 games below .500 with a record of 22-37. Six of the starters in that game had an OPS lower than .685. Three of them had an OPS under .600.
