The Chicago White Sox have claimed relief pitcher Yohan Ramirez off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago announced.

The Pirates had designated Ramirez, as well as Cal Mitchell, for assignment on September 1st, as part of the team’s transition to bring in several September call ups to the active roster.

The White Sox, who sit underneath the 40 man roster limit, now sit at 39 players with the addition of Ramirez.

Ramirez had last pitched in the majors on August 23, where in 2.1 innings pitched he gave up just one hit and one walk (with a hit by pitch as well). He struck out 3 in that same game.

Overall in 2023, Ramirez pitched 34.1 major league innings for the Pirates, recording a 3.67 ERA. He was lethal when on top of his game, striking out 31 batters in that time, but he suffered from extreme struggles controlling his pitches. He walked 14 batters and plunked another 10 in the majors this season.

His 10 batters hit by pitch lead all relievers in the Pirates bullpen, and tied him amongst the entire pitching staff in Pittsburgh, alongside starters Mitch Keller and Johan Oviedo.

He had split the season between MLB and Triple-A, and while down in Indianapolis, he pitched 22.1 innings for the Pirates’ affiliate, recording a 4.43 ERA. His minor league season was almost a mirror to his major league one, albeit to some less extremes.

Ramirez had struck out 32 batters in Triple-A, while walking 12 and hitting another 5.

For the 28 year old from the Dominican Republic, the White Sox will be his fourth major league team since his July 2020 debut.

Currently, Chicago has Ramirez placed in Triple-A, but he may see time up with the White Sox before the season is over. In Pittsburgh, he was on pace to pitch the most singe-season innings of his major league career.
