The Penguins announced on Friday their full lineup for the annual Prospects Challenge up in Buffalo in just a few weeks.

The Penguins will be one of six teams, along with the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, Ottawa Senators, and the hometown Sabres, to participate in the four-day event.

Each team will play three games in the round-robin tournament, all taking place at LECOM Harborcenter.

In all, the Penguins are bringing 16 forwards, along with 8 defensemen and 3 goaltenders.

Among the players appearing for the Penguins is the team’s most recent first round draft pick Brayden Yager. The 14th overall pick will be one of several names to keep an eye on during the tournament, given his high ranking in a highly depleted Penguins prospect pool.

Sam Poulin, Pittsburgh’s 2019 first rounder, will also be there. After taking a mental health break during part of last season, the 22 year old is back and better than ever, looking to push for an NHL job this season.

Poulin did play in 3 games for the Penguins last season, but he’s hoping to secure a much more permanent job in Pittsburgh. On a call up opportunity last season thanks to injuries in the lineup, Poulin recorded his first NHL point, assisting on an Evgeni Malkin goal.

Owen Pickering, a first rounder for Pittsburgh last season, is also on the roster, but is currently listed with an injury. Pickering just recently began his professional career, joining the Penguins’ AHL affiliate at the tail end of the season after his juniors season wrapped up.

The Penguins see big things in Pickering’s future, and are hoping that a full season in the AHL can help him grow as a player. The 19 year old played in 8 games for the WBS Pens last season.

Other names on Pittsburgh’s roster include several players who were also at the prospect camp and subsequent tournament back in early July.

But the Penguins are also bringing some new faces as well, such as 19 year old Max Namestnikov, who just wrapped up an over point-per-game juniors season in the OHL.

In the goaltending department, the Penguins have three goalies from July’s camp: Joel Blomqvist, Michael Simpson, and Taylor Gauthier.

Blomqvist spent the 2022-23 season in Finland’s Liiga, where he put up respectable numbers. He played 1 game at the end of the AHL season with WBS.

Gauthier split last season between the AHL and ECHL, playing roughly equal time with both. He’ll be looking for a full time AHL spot this year, playing in tandem with free agent veteran Magnus Hellberg.

The tournament starts on September 15th, wrapping up on the 18th. Pittsburgh will be playing one game against the Bruins, Senators, and Sabres. A full schedule can be found here.
