After just four snaps as a member of the New York Jets, quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ season is done, after an MRI confirms he has a torn Achilles.
Rodgers’ first game was an electric atmosphere, with Jets jerseys sporting his name littering the stands at MetLife stadium.
He ran out of the tunnel carrying the American flag behind him as part of the ceremony to remember the September 11th attacks 22 years ago.
However, that excitement and adrenaline would quickly turn to fear and concern as Rodgers left the game early on Monday night.
Rodgers was taken down in the backfield on his fourth play of his first career Jets drive, and that was all she wrote. New York’s offensive line gave up a lot of pressure aimed at Rodgers, who didn’t have an easy time in the pocket during the game.
After he was sacked, Rodgers got back up, but looked over to the sideline, shaking his head no, before sitting back down on the field to wait for the medical staff to visit him. He was helped off the field, and once on the sideline, he was carted to the locker room entrance.
Coming into the game for him was Zach Wilson, a former Jets starter who has been unseated from that role multiple times in his career, including when the Jets traded for Rodgers in the offseason.
The Jets played a very timid offense with Wilson in, one that consisted with lots of runs and passes at or near the line of scrimmage. To his credit, however, Wilson did just enough to secure the overtime Jets win over the Buffalo Bills.
He went 14/21 for 140 passing yards, with one interception and one touchdown. He was incredibly aided by the Jets defense and in particular, Jordan Whitehead, who picked off Bills starter Josh Allen three separate times in the game.
With Rodgers now out for the season, Wilson becomes the full time starter again, but it’s possible the Jets bring in a veteran free agent to either play as a backup or compete with Wilson for the starter’s job.
Should the Jets choose to bring someone in, they have quite a lengthy list of free agent QBs to pick from.
The massive change in New York’s roster, and therefore approach to the season, will undoubtedly shake things up in the rest of the AFC. The Jets were picked by many to be a playoff team in 2023, but that becomes a lot less certain with Rodgers now out for the season.
