Just four games into his stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins, forward Jansen Harkins finds himself on the waiver wire.
If he clears, Harkins will be re-assigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Harkins was acquired by Pittsburgh via the waiver wire just a few weeks ago.
It’s not all that surprising of a move. The bottom six has been under the microscope since the start of the season as a unit, and even though it’s very early, the results to this point have been very underwhelming.
Harkins was one of five bottom-six players to not have a single point, and no one in that group has tallied a point since the first game of the season (Lars Eller had an assist in the opener).
A popular choice among fans for a Harkins replacement would be Radim Zohorna. Big Z would bring some extra size to the lineup, while maybe having some better offensive instintcs as well.
But the organization has a plethora of potential suitors for NHL minutes. The WBS Pens currently have Colin White, Vinnie Hinostroza, Sam Poulin, Rem Pitlick, and Alex Nylander currently in their lineup. All played NHL games last season. In addition to that, rookie Valterri Puustinen is an option as well.
It’s possible that we see multiple forwards called up. Noel Acciari was not on the ice for practice today and is currently being evaluated for an upper-body injury, per head coach Mike Sullivan.
Update: the Penguins have recalled Radim Zohorna
