Tristan Jarry is out for the time being, forcing the Penguins to call up another goaltender for at least tonight’s game vs the Los Angeles Kings.

With Jarry out, the Penguins have recalled Joel Blomqvist from the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

In 7 starts in the American Hockey League this season, Blomqvist is sporting an incredible 1.91 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. He has been playing the lion share of the games since Magnus Hellberg was first called up to fill in for Alex Nedeljkovic.

Nedeljkovic has started skating in recent days, but is still on Long Term Injured Reserve.

Hellberg will get the start against the Kings, and will likely start until either Jarry or Nedeljkovic returns to the lineup. His outing against LA will be his first start as a Penguin, although he has appeared in two previous games in relief.

He finished Tuesday’s game vs Anaheim after Jarry left at the very end of the second period. Hellberg helped seal the shutout that Jarry had started against the Ducks for just the sixth shared shutout in franchise history.

The 32 year old has just 25 games (16 starts) under his belt in the NHL, but will be thrust into the role of starter as the Penguins try and stack another win in the final game of their California road trip.

In addition, the Penguins placed rookie defenseman John Ludvig on injured reserve, retroactive to his concussion suffered against the Dallas Stars in his NHL debut. Ludvig went for a huge open ice hit, but he was the one who got the worst of it by far, and has not played or even practiced since.

A waiver claim by the Penguins right before the season started, Ludvig is still out indefinitely but, like Nedeljkovic, has started skating.

Lastly, the Penguins re-assigned forward Vinnie Hinostroza back to the AHL in a corresponding salary cap move to bring up Blomqvist. Hinostroza was playing amazingly in his first two games with Pittsburgh. He had a goal and an assist and provided a major spark for the team’s fourth line, which is where offense had went to die in the early part of the season.

Hinostroza being sent back to the WBS Pens allows Jeff Carter to slide back into the lineup after being a healthy scratch for the first time in his lengthy NHL career.

Carter, who has no points in 9 games this season, will re-join the fourth line against his old team in Los Angeles.
