The Pittsburgh Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, made a trade with the AHL Chicago Wolves earlier today.
The WBS Penguins acquired forward Peter Abbandonato and defenseman Owen Headrick from Chicago in exchange for the ultra coveted future considerations.
Abbandonato signed a professional try out with Pittsburgh in the offseason. He survived training camp and appeared in a pre-season game for the Penguins, before he was let go from his PTO.
Abbandonato, 25, then signed a deal with the Chicago Wolves, and appeared in 12 games for the team, recording 1 goal and 2 assists.
The Wolves are the AHL’s only independent team, meaning they have no NHL affiliate, and therefore make their roster and lineup decisions with no influence of an NHL front office.
Last season, Abbandonato spent the year in the AHL for the Laval Rocket, where he scored 46 points in 65 games.
With several forwards currently out of the lineup for the WBS Pens due to call-ups to the NHL level, the team is in need of some extra players in their forward group.
The WBS Pens are currently without Alex Nylander, Jansen Harkins, and Vinnie Hinostroza, the latter of which has been up in the NHL for weeks at this point.
Abbandonato once led his junior league, the QMJHL, in points with 111 while leading his Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to a Memorial Cup victory.
Despite that, the Quebec native went undrafted and has since bounced around a few places between the AHL and ECHL. Now, he finds himself back in the Penguins organization.
Owen Headrick, 26, also comes over in the deal. The Canadian defenseman spent the vast majority of last season in the ECHL for the Idaho Steelheads. He recorded 54 points in 61 games and added another 19 in 20 playoff games.
This season, he has appeared in 5 games for the Wolves, tallying a lone assist.
Headrick made his professional debut in the Penguins organization. He played 4 games for Pittsburgh’s ECHL affiliate, the Wheeling Nailers. He has since played in University for four years, and has now turned his way back to the AHL and ECHL.
He has very little AHL experience, recording just 9 total games in the league spread out over the course of three seasons.
