With Kenny Picket out for considerable time, the Pittsburgh Steelers were down to two quarterbacks in the organization.
To remedy that, the Steelers have signed former Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley to the team’s practice squad.
McSorley is a former sixth round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019. The 28 year old has appeared in 9 games over the course of his NFL career.
Over those games, McSorley has attempted 83 passes, 45 of which were complete. He has 412 yards to his name (he was meant to be in Pittsburgh!) and has 1 touchdown to 5 interceptions.
His sole touchdown pass, ironically, came against the Steelers. Filling in late in a December 2020 game, McSorley threw a pass to Hollywood Brown, who danced through the Pittsburgh defense all the way to the endzone.
The game would end in a 19-14 win for Pittsburgh, putting them at 11-0 on the year. However, the team would suffer one of the worst collapses in franchise history, ending the year 12-4.
In his only career NFL start, which came last season for the Arizona Cardinals last season, McSorley went 24/45 for 217 yards, no touchdowns and 1 interception.
His efforts kept the game close, but Arizona would ultimately lose 19-16 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McSorley previously spent time with the Chicago Bears’ practice squad, signing with them on October 17th and being released November 21st.
McSorley was with the New England Patriots, who come to town Thursday night, in the off-season, but was released ahead of kickoff.
McSorley will, in all likelihood, serve as the third string/emergency quarterback for the Steelers for the foreseeable future.
Unless, of course, the Steelers decide to prank Mason Rudolph, and bump McSorley up to the backup job behind interim starter Mitch Trubisky.
