Former Pittsburgh Penguins forward Colin White will make his debut for his new team, the Montreal Canadiens, against his old team tonight at PPG Paints Arena.
The forward was claimed off waivers by Montreal earlier today, and luckily for White, all he will have to do is travel across the hallway to the visitor’s locker room for tonight’s game.
White was waived yesterday by the Penguins after failing to record any points in 11 games for Pittsburgh. He was called up in mid-January, and averaged just under 10 minutes of ice time a night.
The Penguins signed him to a professional try out during the offseason, and after the preseason, the former first round pick by Ottawa earned himself a contract within the organization.
White had 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) in 21 games with the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Crazily enough, White practiced with the Penguins this morning, just before he was claimed by the Canadiens. Per Seth Rorabaugh, White was at the arena this morning for Pittsburgh’s optional skate. Now, still at the arena, he will be wearing the opposing team’s uniform. The team has already confirmed he will hit the ice tonight.
White’s waiving corresponds with the Penguins activating forward Noel Acciari off of Injured Reserve. Acciari has been out with a concussion after suffering a nasty hit to the head against the Winnipeg Jets two weeks ago.
In Acciari’s absence, the Penguins claimed forward Matthew Phillips off waivers from the Washington Capitals. Now that Acciari is back, a move had to be made due to the salary cap.
