As I was spending this morning remarking at Jesse Puljujärvi’s performance for the Penguins last night as they hosted the Hurricanes, I mentioned that Puljujärvi, an ex-Hurricane, had stolen the show away from ex-Penguin Jake Guentzel in his first game back in Pittsburgh since the trade.
But besides Puljujärvi and Guentzel, there are far more connections between these two teams. Like, an odd amount.
Pittsburgh was icing three ex-Hurricanes, and Carolina matched with three ex-Penguins. Some of the names are obvious given the painfully recent Guentzel trade, but a majority of the players are with their new teams entirely independent of that.
So, I complied a list of these guys, because why the heck not? Enjoy:
Jake Guentzel, Current Hurricane

Let’s get the obvious ones out of the way first. Jake Guentzel, a former third round pick of the Penguins all the way back in 2013, was one of the last homegrown talents the team boasted after the development of Crosby, Malkin, and Letang.
In the final year of his deal, Guentzel and the Penguins could not reach an agreement on a new contract, and new team management sought to get younger overall. The Penguins traded Guentzel to Carolina for a three prospects, a pick (maybe two if conditions work the right way), and a roster player (who is next up on the list).
Jake wasted no time making an impact with the Canes. In 9 games, Guentzel has tallied 2 goals and 10 assists, showcasing not only that he was not a product of Sidney Crosby, but that he can excel at dishing the puck.
After his homecoming game back in Pittsburgh, Guentzel was asked about the failed contract negotiations, to which he said: “My intention was to stay. They thought there was a better direction.”
