With the news coming out of Seattle yesterday that Dan Byslma was set to become the team’s new head coach, it brought me back to when he was the head coach of the Penguins.

Byslma’s redemption arc has been quite interesting to watch. The former Penguins bench boss eventually went on to coach the Buffalo Sabres and be an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings before accepting an AHL coaching job with the new Coachella Valley Firebirds for the last few years.

Now, with Dave Hakstol out, the Kraken are promoting Byslma back to the NHL as the organization moves in a new direction.

Bylsma coached the Penguins to a 2009 Stanley Cup win after being hired mid-season, and remained the head coach until the summer of 2014, when a newly hired general manager by the name of Jim Rutherford opted to relieve him of his position in favor of his own guy.

Rutherford ended up wildly missing the mark with his first hire, as Mike Johnston cluelessly fumbled around with the team for a year and a half before being shown the door himself.

Byslma, meanwhile, was still paid by the Penguins per his contract during the 2014-15 season, and after that year was allowed to seek a job somewhere else.

Most of you might remember when Byslma was hired by the Sabres, and as a result of him still being under contract with the Penguins, Buffalo had to pay a third round pick to pry him out of Pittsburgh.

But did you also remember that the Penguins acquired another third round pick for a coach just a week later?
