After years of living in the flat cap world of the NHL, all of that pent up money and angst was finally released on July 1st of this year, as the salary cap resumed increasing and general managers across the league suddenly had more breathing room to work with.
That resulted in over $1.1 billion dollars being handed out over 160 signings, spanning 354 total years. Despite all that insanity, there are still a ton of names are still unsigned, and that includes a few players currently elsewhere.
One example is former NHLer Ondřej Kaše (pronounced kah-sha), who was open back in May about wanting to return to the National Hockey League. A former seventh round pick by the Anaheim Ducks in 2014, Kaše was a real underrated player in the NHL for several seasons out west.
He ended up being valued very highly by the front office in Boston, when in 2020 the Bruins traded David Backes, a first round pick, and prospect defenseman Axel Andersson.
Luckily for the Bruins, that trade hasn’t hurt them all that much. Backes played 21 games for the Ducks before retiring, Andersson has never played in the NHL, and that first rounder became Jacob Perrault has only one NHL game to his name.
