Yesterday, the Penguins released the rosters for their development camp, which kicks off Saturday and runs through Wednesday. The five day event will feature skating and practice sessions on days one through four, concluding with the tournament on the final day.

All days are free and open for the public to attend. A detailed schedule from the Penguins can be found here.

Coming to camp at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex are 30 forwards, 15 defenseman, and 3 goaltenders for a total of 48 players. While headliner players will include Owen Pickering and Brayden Yager, the team’s two most recent first round picks, there are a lot of interesting names that are slated to be in Pittsburgh in the coming days.

For starters, the camp will be an opportunity for us to see Pittsburgh’s 2024 draft class in Penguins jerseys for the very first time. All six players the team drafted just last week will be attending, including second rounders Tanner Howe (winger) and Harrison Brunicke (defenseman), two prospects that have Penguins fans buzzing.

In addition, fourth round defenseman Chase Pietila, sixth round defenseman Joona Väisänen, seventh round center Mac Swanson, and seventh round defenseman Finn Harding will all be there.

Last season, all but one of Pittsburgh’s picks made it to camp, with the outlier being winger Mikhail Ilyin, a fifth round pick who was still in Russia at the time of the development camp. He will also miss this year’s camp.

The rest of the class of 2023 will make it, however, including winger Brayden Yager, who probably sits atop Pittsburgh’s prospect pool rankings right now.

Yager was a standout last year at camp, creating a lot of fanfare around the facility and even amongst his development teammates.

In all, 19 of the 48 total players on the roster have been drafted by the Penguins over the last few years. Here’s a breakdown of who else is coming from other classes:

2023 Draft:

  • Cooper Foster
  • Emil Jarventie
  • Brayden Yager
  • Kalle Kangas
  • Emil Pieniniemi

2022 Draft:

  • Luke Devlin
  • Zam Plantee
  • Owen Pickering

2021 Draft:

  • Tristan Broz
  • Isaac Belliveau
  • Daniel Laatsch

2020 Draft:

  • Chase Yoder

A few additional players have arrived in Pittsburgh via trade. This includes Ville Koivunen and Cruz Lucius, two pieces of the Jake Guentzel trade with the Carolina Hurricanes. The recently traded for Bennett MacArthur will also be making an appearance.

The remainder of the players are here on invitation. A lot of them are pretty young guys who are either undrafted or yet to be drafted. Sometimes players who are invited to come to development camps do end up joining the organization down the line.

Sometimes it’s also a precursor to joining another team. We saw that happen with Collin Graf, the highly coveted NCAA free agent last season. While still in college, he attended the prospect camp of the Nashville Predators, but eventually signed with San Jose when the time came.

Lastly, one area where we won’t see anyone familiar is in net. It’s an all new look for the Penguins; None of the them have any official ties to the team, and none of them were present at camp last season.

Unfortunately, none of them had tremendous years wherever they played, but statistically the best goaltender was Jackson Parsons. At 19 years old, he had a 2.99 goals against average, a .897 save percentage, and 4 shutouts with the Kitchener Rangers of the junior OHL.

Also making up the goaltending trio is Owen Say from Mercyhurst University and Charlie Schenkel from the Soo Greyhounds of the OHL.
