I’ve been working on a mini-series the last few days, reviewing the trades that the Pirates made at this time last year. On Thursday, I talked about the Carlos Santana deal. Yesterday, I discussed the five-player deal that saw Rich Hill and Ji-Man Choi depart Pittsburgh.
Today is a much more simple trade than yesterday: a one-for-one swap that stayed contained within the state of Pennsylvania. In a flurry of moves that included the Hill/Choi trade and Austin Hedges deal (which won’t be included in this mini-series), the Pirates traded infielder Rodolfo Castro to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter.
At the time of the trade, a 24-year old Castro had played 78 games for the Pirates and had slashed .228/.317/.355 with 6 homers and 22 RBI.
Castro had split the last three seasons between the minor and major leagues, but starting in 2022 all of his minor league work came in Triple-A with the Indianapolis Indians.
