Rando Arozarena is gone. Traded to Seattle.

Jazz Chisholm is gone. Traded to the Yankees.

Brent Rooker and/or JJ Bleday are supposedly gone, with reports suggesting that Oakland is leaning towards keeping both of those men.

So if you’re a Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and hoped that maybe this could be the year that general manager Ben Cherington finally picks up the phone and makes a buyers-style deal at the deadline, you’re probably pretty disappointed right now.

And you would have every right to be. The Pirates need at least one bat (and preferably a second) if they want to be able to make a serious push for a wild card spot in the National League. That’s especially true considering that Rowdy Tellez, who has become one of the team’s most leaned on hitters over the last couple months, left the game a few days ago with back spasms and is still out of the lineup.

In particular though, it’s their outfielders that need to produce more at the plate. Jack Suwinski is slashing .184/.266/.327, and even though he is batting a much higher .250 in July, it’s still an area where he needs to dramatically improve. Much the same could be said for Michael A. Taylor, who is slashing .200/.264/.278.

Though these two are definitely the ones who would be the first to take a backseat to an incoming player (Suwinski could be optioned, Taylor would have to take a bench role unless the Pirates DFA’d him).

But aside from Bryan Reynolds, the team truly has no terrific outfield hitter.

Joshua Palacios, who was recalled just a few weeks ago, is slashing .240/.345/.380, but is ideally probably more of a bench bat for the Pirates. Connor Joe has had some ups and downs and averaged out to a .241/.326/.387 slash line.

Point is, the Pirates need to bring in somebody if they want to still compete. However, as the trade deadline continues to inch closer and the kitchen gets more hot, Cherington will only have bargain bin options left, if he even decides to pursue a move at all.

So, in trying to come up with a realistic move the Pirates could make now, I’ve come to the underwhelming conclusion that this name is the most realistic answer.
