Corliss Waitman is back for another round with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After suffering three seasons of subpar performances at the punting position, the Steelers finally believed they had shored up that spot on special teams when they signed Cameron Johnston out of free agency.

They may still have the answer for the future, but the process of fully finding that out will have to wait at least until next season. Johnston’s knee injury suffered in Pittsburgh’s Week 1 was declared season-ending earlier this week, forcing Pittsburgh to sign a new punter to replace the injured Johnston.

Enter Corliss Waitman.

The Belgian-born, South Alabama graduate got his start with the Steelers back in 2021 under similar circumstances. Pittsburgh’s main punter, seventh round pick Pressley Harvin, was out with injury, forcing the Steelers to scour the free agent market for a replacement leg.

He made his NFL debut in Kansas City against the Chiefs, where he punted twice in a 36-10 blowout loss for the Steelers (can you believe they only punted twice in that game?). Waitman actually had showcased quite the leg in this game, booting his first one 58 yards and his second one 63 yards.

Unfortunately for him, his net yards per punt, which accounts for any kind of return or touchback yards by the opposition, was a mere 41.5, with a Mecole Hardman 18-yard return and a touchback limiting the effectiveness of Waitman’s performance.

In his second (and final) game for the Steelers in 2021, he punted 5 times in Ben Roethlisberger’s final career home game. He averaged 48.80 yards per punt in that game, with a net average of 43 yards.
