Random and obscure players have always been some of my favorite athletes to discuss. To me, part of the joy in writing about sports is getting to explore and cover the careers of the players who aren’t the biggest names on any given roster.
If you’ve followed the Pirates for a while, you’ve been subjected to many, many obscure and fringe big leaguers filling up rosters that were designed to lose. Most of these players have only played sparingly, if at all, on major league rosters since.
But even since the team has marginally improved from those 100-loss seasons, we still have had a plethora of obscure Pirates suit up for the team in the last few years.
The 2024 Pirates have their own bunch. In-season call-ups saw a dozen or so names that we didn’t really expect to see wearing black and yellow this season, thanks to injury or underperforming major league players.
But who takes the crown as the most random Pittsburgh Pirate of this season? Who truly is the name that 10 or 20 years down the road only a true sicko would remember wearing a Pirates jersey?
I’ve narrowed my list to five names, but before I dive into these merry men, let me disqualify a few people that I think will be a bit more memorable.
