Tristan Jarry is officially back.

In a duo of roster moves announced yesterday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Penguins recalled Jarry from his conditioning stint in the American Hockey League, as well as starting forward Matt Nieto on a conditioning stint as the latest step in activating him from Long Term Injured Reserve.

Jarry, as we all probably remember, had a nightmare start to his 2024-25 season. His 3 starts saw him compile a 5.47 goals against average and a .836 save percentages. He looked lost out there on the ice, and his NHL season (for the time being) ended unceremoniously when he was yanked 12 minutes into a game after surrendering a trio of goals.

At the time, I called for the Penguins to waive Jarry. Given his $5+ million dollar cap hit for the next several seasons, the Penguins would have had no worries about him not clearing. Once he did, he would have a chance to get a full mental reset in the AHL.

The team took the second half of that idea, loaning Jarry to the AHL on a conditioning stint. It allowed them to keep Jarry technically on the NHL roster, but it limited his time in the minor leagues to just two weeks.

That small amount of time came to an end this weekend, and the Penguins are going back to keeping three goaltenders in the NHL…at least for now.
