Saying this year has not gone to plan would be quite the understatement for Tristan Jarry.

From a season debut that saw him get lit up for six goals against the New York Rangers, to being sent to the American Hockey League on a conditioning stint, to having career lows across the board, to now the Penguins waiving him altogether.

Jarry, in the second of a five year extension he signed with the Penguins back in the summer of 2023, has a miserable .884 save percentage and a 3.31 goals against average.

He has allowed a goal on the first shot of the game six times this season, and four times on the second shot. In total, he made it past the fifth shot of the game without allowing a goal an astounding six times in 22 games this season.

On Wednesday, the team put out an eerily worded, almost threatening post announcing that Jarry was being placed on waivers.

As of 2PM on Thursday, no team claimed him and his $5.375 million cap hit. Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas was very polite in assessing his decision.

“He’s continued to come in here, put the work in and that’s not been a question at all,” he said. “That just hasn’t materialized the way we would like it to on the ice. At this level, you get to the point where you have to do what’s right… for him and for us.”

That’s a very nice way of saying “this guy sucks and we can’t possible play him anymore.”

Now that Jarry is cleared, the Penguins have sent him to the AHL and recalled goaltending prospect Joel Blomqvist in Jarry’s spot. Blomqvist, who is the only goaltender to put up a save percentage north of .900 this season, played in Jarry’s place earlier this year while he was on his conditioning stint.

So the question becomes: what now for Jarry? He has three and a half years left of an albatross of a contract, and no numbers at all right now to suggest that he is an NHL goaltender right now.

Getting out of his contract won’t be easy, but I suspect the Penguins will at least try and maneuver some things to move Jarry out of town. Here’s three ideas on that front:
