Last night, the Pittsburgh Pirates lost again. Like the game before, they were able to keep it close until the dying innings, eventually falling 9-4 to the San Diego Padres at home.
Mitch Keller was charged with the loss and the Padres hung three earned runs on the usually reliable Caleb Ferguson in the eighth inning to really put the game out of reach.
In any normal Pirates season, the excitement for baseball usually wears off around the end of July and early August. By that point, the Pirates have usually done enough losing and recently sold off any veteran free agency signing on an expiring contract. Training camp is soon opening for the Steelers, and come September the Penguins will do the same.
This season, we aren’t even through the first week of May, and you can already start to feel it. The fan base is mentally checking out as the team stacks loss after loss. The attendance at PNC Park last night was under 13,000.
Look, there are endless numbers and stats that I could throw at you to show just how badly the start to the 2025 season has been for the Pirates.
But there’s one that is particularly staggering as we sit here on May 3rd, with the Pirates sitting at 12-21. This team is worse than the ones that were tanking.
