The Pittsburgh Pirates shut out the New York Mets at Citi Field Thursday night to avoid the sweep.
While two-run homers by both Matt Gorski and Jared Triolo powered the 4-0 win for the Pirates, left fielder Alexander Canario had himself a two-hit night and a solid performance in the field.
Canario, who spent spring training with the Mets, joined the Pirates on April 1st after Pittsburgh acquired him for cash considerations.
The Mets had traded for Canario prior to the start of spring training, but designated him for assignment after he failed to make New York’s roster out of camp.
For Canario, he is looking for a chance to get major league reps, something that has proved elusive for the him over the last few seasons. Prior to 2025, Canario appeared in just 21 games over two years when he was in the Chicago Cubs organization.
He went 12-for-42 with five extra-base hits, a pair of home runs, and 8 RBI over that time. His one big issue in that limited time frame was strikeouts, where Canario racked up 19 in 45 plate appearances (a 42.2% rate).
