Matt Dumba is now a Pittsburgh Penguin.

In a trade announced by the club on Thursday, the Penguins have received Dumba and a second round pick in 2028 from the Dallas Stars in exchange for defenseman Vladislav Kolyachonok.

Kolyachonok was a waiver claim by the Penguins midway through last season from Utah. He played 12 games for the Penguins from February until season’s end, registering two assists. He’ll serve as a depth defenseman in Dallas, although that may not necessarily be at the NHL level.

Dumba, meanwhile, is a cap dump from Dallas. One of the few teams in serious salary cap trouble right now, the Stars have had to find ways to move out some of the more expensive players further down the lineup.

Dumba is entering the final year of a contract that accounts for $3.75 million against the salary cap.

Coming off a particularly rough season with the Stars, Dumba put up a career-worst ten points in 63 games from the blue line, and was eventually pushed out of the lineup as the playoffs got underway. Now, he gets a chance of scenery and moves to the city where he was originally drafted in, back when the Minnesota Wild took him seventh overall at the 2012 Draft in Pittsburgh.

Dumba is the latest in a series of moves Dubas has made over the last few years focused on acquiring and subsequently flipping them. Some of them have involved signing free agents, like Anthony Beauvillier last season and Anthony Mantha last week.
