On Friday, the Pirates recalled two pitchers in a bullpen swap, bringing up lefty Evan Sisk to replace the DFA’d lefty Ryan Borucki, and righty Colin Holderman to replace the optioned right-hander Cam Sanders.

For Holderman, the rough journey of the last year and change culminates with one more appearance at the major league level.

Holderman started the season as one of the shutdown arms in the bullpen for the Pirates. He was hoping to rebound from a second half last season that saw him absolutely crater.

In his first 28 games (26.2 innings), Holderman amassed one of baseball’s best ERAs at 0.68. He allowed just 14 hits and 11 walks, while only surrendering two earned runs that entire span.

But, in his second half, he fell off a cliff. In his last 27 games (24.2 innings) to close the year, Holderman was lit up for a 5.84 ERA.
