This was the major league return that we all wanted to see from Johan Oviedo.

As the Pittsburgh Pirates took two of three from the visiting Toronto Blue Jays, the story line from the series finale was the pitching performance of Oviedo, who threw five strong innings en route to a 2-1 Pirates victory.

Just minutes before game time, the Pirates made their roster moves official, recalling Oviedo from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioning lefty reliever Evan Sisk back down. Oviedo was immediately named the starting pitcher for Pittsburgh’s rubber match against Toronto at PNC Park.

Oviedo was making his first MLB start in two weeks and only his second start in the bigs since 2023. He made his much-awaited return from Tommy John surgery and a lengthy recovery process back on August 4th.

However, that game did not go to plan. Oviedo walked three batters and surrendered a pair of runs in a first inning that saw him throw over 40 pitches. Given his shakiness and the Pirates still wanting to monitor his pitch count, he was done after just one frame.
