On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Pirates made a flurry of roster moves.
Ronny Simon is headed back to Triple-A, Dauri Moreta is up from Indianapolis, and Oneil Cruz is back on the roster after a rehab assignment in Double-A Altoona.
But the move that got people talking was the team’s decision to designate lefty Andrew Heaney for assignment, likely ending his time with the Pirates.
Heaney signed a one-year contract with the Pirates back in the winter. His deal, with a $5.25 million base salary, also came laced with incentives, many of which he will not reach because, well…he’s no longer with the team.
On the surface, there’s some parallels to the Rowdy Tellez situation from last year.
If you don’t recall, the Pirates got some serious heat after they designated Tellez for assignment in the dying days of the season, with the first basement just four plate appearances shy of 425 on the year. Had he reached that mark, he would have earned a $200K bonus etched into his contract.
