For the tenth year in a row, there won’t be any postseason baseball for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
But, there is postseason action happening within the organization. Two of their minor league affiliates, High-A Greensboro and Double-A Altoona, qualified for their respective playoffs.
While Altoona doesn’t start their run until next week, the Grasshoppers start their series today down at First National Bank Field.
Greensboro heading to the postseason after going 43-23 in the second half of the South Atlantic League season. They finished 1.5 games ahead of the Hudson Valley Renegades, affiliate for the New York Yankees, for the North Division title.
Greensboro missed out on winning the first half of the season by the thinnest of margins, falling half a game back of the Brooklyn Cyclones, affiliate of the New York Mets, for the first half title.
However, the Grasshoppers will have their chance for revenge, playing the Cyclones in the Divisional series. And the odds might be advantageous for Greensboro. The Cyclones stumbled tremendously in the second half, posting just a 26-39 record and finishing fifth place in the six-team division.
But the Grasshoppers weren’t immune to some end of season slumping either. Despite winning the division, the team went on an extended skid to close out the season. It’s not exactly surprising, given that the team has lost a lot of their offensive firepower to Double-A Altoona over the last two months, including the top prospect in baseball, Konnor Griffin
Since the promotion of Griffin on August 18th, the Grasshoppers struggled to a 9-9 record. That streak was part of a larger pattern for the Grasshoppers, who went only 12-13 in their final 25 games of the season.
Time will tell if they can turn it around in the postseason, but if they do, these three players might play a big role in why.
