A lot has changed since the last time we saw the Penguins take the ice. There’s a new head coach, a new surrounding staff, and a new goal for the organization heading into this season. And even though the goal might not be to win the Stanley Cup this season, there is still a lot of opportunity to be had for players, both new and returning.

Training Camp Transcripts takes a look at the fringe NHLers, long shot candidates, and lesser known players who will battle for spots in the team’s lineup this fall. In today’s edition, Tristan Broz.

Though the Pittsburgh Penguins have not drafted well in recent years, the team is starting to get the remnants of draft pick success out of their relatively recent classes. Goaltender Joel Blomqvist, the team’s second round pick in 2020, made his NHL debut last season and played 15 total games for the team. He’s in the mix for a goaltending job out of camp.

Defenseman Owen Pickering, the team’s first round pick in 2022, also made his NHL debut last year. He chipped in during 25 games for the Penguins, and while he experienced some growing pains on the blue line, he figures to get a much more expanded role in a year or two.

Tristan Broz is trying to become the first representative from Pittsburgh’s 2021 draft class to crack the NHL. Like Blomqvist and Pickering, he is the first pick of his class, taken 58th overall out of the USHL. A forward who was described as having an “attacking mentality” on the ice in his draft, Broz now stands at the precipice of perhaps getting to the NHL.
